What is AIVA?

AIVA is an acronym for Artificial Intelligence Virtual Artist, an advanced technology that utilizes AI algorithms to compose original music. It’s an innovative virtual composer that has gained recognition in the music industry for its unique ability to generate compelling musical compositions autonomously.

Founded by AIVA technology in February 2016, it has generated a lot of buzz since its launch and has also gained enough credibility to be recognized as the world’s first virtual composer by SACEM.

AIVA is also used by some professional composer users, either as a starting point or a vital part of their songwriting process. One such person is the Grammy-winning composer Dana Leong, who used it to create a song called “iDragon.” He also explains his process of working with AIVA in this video.

Other examples include pop singer Taryn Southern, who used it to create his song “Lovesick,” and the Austrian composer BERNTH, who wrote this amazing composition with AIVA.

How Does AIVA Work?

AIVA works by studying different types of music from different times and styles. You can supply details such as style, mood, chords, tempo, and even the type of scales to use — and it will create the composition based on your input. It learns the patterns and rules that make music sound good, such as the type of chords that go well together or the type of transitions and rhythm lines used in that genre.

Then, it uses these rules to create new melodies, harmonies, and rhythms that match your inputs. AIVA’s AI-generated music can be used for different occasions, like video games, movies, podcasts, and ads.

AIVA Limitations

  • Strict licensing and copyrights (more on this later).
  • AIVA only produces instrumental music and vocals. You will need to create lyrics on your own, though.
  • AIVA may require some prior musical knowledge to utilize the tool to its maximum potential. They do provide a step-by-step walkthrough & video tutorials to help even users get started — so it can still be a great tool to use for newbies.

Getting Started with AIVA

AIVA’s preset styles

AIVA Music generator ai home page

After signing up for the platform, I was greeted by the AIVA home screen. At first glance, the UI looks good, with a menu at the side and two green buttons for “Create” and “Create Track.” This is where all generated music can be found.

Users can select the genre of music for their composition.

This is the profile library with templates of already generated music ready to be tweaked and generated. I will head over to preset styles and begin composition to start the track generation from scratch.

Preset styles: emotion and advanced view

The preset style is divided into “emotion” and “advanced” views. Each view has its own set of options to choose from, depending on what you are looking to create.

Creating the structure of your composition

After selecting “Pop” in the advanced view, I made some selections and clicked on “Create tracks.” I was redirected to the homepage under compositions immediately, and after a few seconds, my music was ready.

This is the output of my track. AIVA really did it justice, based on the limited input I provided. You can opt for a longer track; it’s all based on your selection.

AIVA gets more interesting with the editor workspace. Click on the three dots beside your composed music and select the option “open in editor.” This is really where the AI excels, as you can tweak your audio to your heart’s content and have it edited to your taste, even in the free version, with no limitations. With AIVA´s free version, you are limited to three monthly downloads and licenses.

AIVA’s generation profiles

This feature allows users to select existing tracks and tweak them based on the kind of emotion they would like the output to illicit. It also allows users to tweak the more technical parts of the track, such as its modal quality, scale, and tempo. For greater control of the sound, experienced users can even add or subtract the layers of musical instruments.

I decided to give it a quick try to see what it would do – and this is what it created. I changed the key to A Dorian, increased the tempo, changed the emotion to “fear,” and set the dynamic range as “soft” to “loud”. I wasn’t expecting much, but it produced a dramatic sound, for sure.

Frequently Asked Questions about AIVA

  1. Can AIVA create the same track twice?

AIVA Helpdesk claims that it’s nearly impossible for their tool to create the same composition twice, as long as it is trained properly. They attribute this claim to their usage of stochastic algorithms, which are known to make use of “randomness” as part of constructing the data set for training.

In other words, AIVA is designed to generate original compositions, and the algorithms and processes within AIVA ensure that each generated track is distinct and original. However, it can create compositions with similar elements or styles based on user preferences or inputs.

  1. Can AIVA generate audio tracks that are vocal?

No, AIVA doesn’t generate vocal tracks. You might notice a “La La La La” female voice layer on certain tracks it creates, depending on composition and type of music.

  1. What formats can AIVA music be downloaded in?

AIVA music can be downloaded in MP3 audio, orchestrated MIDI (the orchestrated version), reduced MIDI (the piano reduction), 16bit & 48kHz uncompressed WAV files, and stems. You can also download chords in a pdf format.

Final Thoughts

AIVA can be a powerful tool for digital media creators who need original music for ads, YouTube videos, podcasts, or social clips.

Everything demoed here was done with a free account, and I’m certain someone with musical expertise can use this to create really poignant or useful soundtracks.

In the free plan, you have no limits on how many tracks you can edit; you are just limited to three downloads a month. So play around with it carefully, and see if you want to make it a part of your creative pursuits.
