In our hyperconnected lives, where distraction is just a click away, it’s not easy to stay organized. Despite all the apps and tools available, we often find ourselves drowning in digital clutter. There’s so much information to consume and digest, resulting in a “knowledge overwhelm” that paralyzes people and prevents them from taking action. Even with project management tools, many struggle to keep their routines tidy.

Mem.ai, a generative AI that can be trained as a personal knowledge assistant, claims to be a solution to this problem. Its features include a “self-organizing” workspace, and making the tool into a personal search engine is on their roadmap. At a glance, Mem.ai looks similar to Notion (a simple workspace for effective project management). But after taking it for a test drive, it goes beyond it as a powerful tool that helps you capture and find information in seconds without the hassle of creating complex organizational systems.

Let’s dive into what Mem.ai actually is and how it can help bring clarity to your creative life. You’ll find key features, learn how to use it to organize your workspace, and see what its creators have on their development roadmap.

What is Mem.ai and Does it Live Up to Its Promise?

Kenny Moody and Dennis Xu co-founded Mem as a note-taking application, but it’s evolved into a personal knowledge assistant designed to help you synthesize, reflect upon, and expand your knowledge. It’s like having your own J.A.R.V.I.S. from Iron Man, always ready to assist.

“Imagine if you had a Google search bar but for all nonpublic information,” Xu says. “For every piece of information that was uniquely relevant to you (that is what Mem is.)”

With Mem, you can save and edit notes in your personal knowledge base, explore web search results, and even get assistance with tasks like gift planning or pet care. And the best part? Mem learns from you, adapting to your communication style and preferences to make your interactions as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

It’s a tool that’s designed to help you navigate and make sense of all the information you encounter in your daily life—starting with what’s in your notes.

Mem only accepts signups via Microsoft or Google. Immediately after your signup, you will see a pop-up notifying you of your access to a 7-day free trial of Mem X. Click on “Get Started”.

Importing Notes from Other Note Apps to Train Mem as Your Personal Assistant

You would be presented with three import options: Evernote, Notion, and Markdown. You have the option to import all your information from these options. If you haven’t used any of these apps to make notes before, click on “skip this and start with an empty account.”

You can import your notes from these apps to start training your AI assistant.

Note: To maximize its effectiveness, the AI needs as much information from you as possible. With this information, it will digest your lines of thought so it can work as your second brain, provide responses like you would, and work hand in hand with you as a mini-brain that never forgets.

For the purpose of this guide, we have decided to try out Mem with an empty account so we can go over the setup from the beginning.

Setting up Mem.ai from Scratch

After the entire signing-up process, you would arrive at the homepage, which is basically Chat GPT powered by Mem. It has the potential for a remarkably personalized approach but you first need to train the AI.

An excerpt from the Mem.ai website showing different applications of the AI once it’s trained. “Smart Write” and “Smart Edit” are both features built inside Mem.

To begin creating your space, head to “Collections” (You can find this on the top left corner of the screen). Click on New Collection, input your collection name, and your collection is created.

Click on the “New Note” button at the top right of your screen. I started by writing down a few notes and adding each note to the collection I created just to check things out.

Creating a new note on Mem AI

While writing a new note, there was an automatic search going on. We were presented with “Similar Titled Mems” at my disposal to review, remember, and possibly use to generate more ideas for this new note. Once I click on any note (Mem), it opens up, and I can have both notes side by side.

While this may not seem like much (considering we started from scratch,) imagine having a library of thousands of notes collected from your daily life, that are sorted this way for you to free yourself of clutter — and actually use the information you’ve amassed.

If you want to enjoy the self-organizing features of mem, you need to go beyond “Collections“. You can use tags (#name, #class, or #place,) or bidirectional links (simply type @ sign and the title of the mem or “copy mem link” when you click on the three dots above your writing tab.)

Finishing the above steps will give your Mem workspace some knowledge about you. Let’s dive into some amazing features of Mem.

Top Features of Mem.ai: Maximizing Your Workspace Organization

Mem AI is Highly Personalized

Mem’s AI technology evolves through your interactions with the platform, enhancing its accuracy and efficiency. Its primary goal is to assist you in locating the information you require precisely when needed.

Powerful Search engine

Mem’s smart search lets you easily find what you need in your workspace. You can use keywords, phrases, or tags to locate specific mems or collections. What’s cool is that Mem understands natural language, so you can ask a question or type a phrase, and it will find related results for you.

For example, let’s say you’re looking for information on project management techniques. You can type in a query like “What are some effective project management techniques?” and Mem will sift through your notes, articles, and even web search results to give you the most relevant information.

Similar Mems Enhance Navigation

This feature uses AI to automatically identify and surface related notes, enhancing your organization and navigation. When viewing a note, related ones are displayed in the right sidebar. This presents you with previous notes for referencing while writing.

Smart Write Makes Content in Your Voice

Mem’s smart write feature, available with Mem X, uses AI to enhance your writing by drawing from your existing notes and documents in Mem. This feature is similar to other AI writing tools but stands out by leveraging your personal knowledge base, making your writing more similar to your conversational style. What you write will also be equipped with insights and observations based on your knowledge base in Mem.

How to access Mem’s Smart Write:

  • Go to new notes or continue in existing notes.
  • Start your command or question with a forward slash (/).
  • Click enter once you are done.

Smart Edit Formats Your Text Automatically

Mem.ai’s smart edit feature goes beyond basic grammar and spelling checks. It uses AI to analyze your notes, offering intelligent suggestions to enhance your writing. You can input your editing command (natural language is also understood) or select from the default commands.

How to access Mem’s Smart Edit feature

  • Go to new notes or continue in existing notes.
  • Highlight the text you desire to edit.
  • Click on the magic wand in the formatting options that appear.
  • Input the editing command or select from the options.

Add sources

Mem allows you to add your knowledge from different sources to the platform and incorporate it into your workspace. With this feature, users can import content from messaging through SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram messages, Twitter threads, and even existing apps, including Notion, Evernote, and Markdown.

By connecting Mem to other apps through Zapier integrations, users can also automate adding relevant information to their workspace.

Email and Calendar syncing aren’t available yet but are currently listed on the web app as options that are coming soon.

Tips for Making Full Use of Mem.ai

  1. Star Pages: For very important pages you want to have at your fingertips, star the pages for quick access in the favorites tab on the top left of your screen.
  2. Create Collections: Group relevant notes together using collections. Unlike traditional folders, a note can be part of multiple collections, giving you more flexibility in organizing your knowledge. Use the “+ Add to Collection” button or type the ‘#’ key within a note to quickly add it to a collection. You can also create new collections from the Collections page.
  3. Message on the go: If you are like me, you send important things you need to jot down in the “notepad” app, or sometimes, even WhatsApp. Mem is here to change that, too. With Mem, you can now send notes to your workspace through text, WhatsApp, or Telegram. This is handy when you’re not near your computer or can’t access Mem. When you send a message to a special Mem contact, the app’s AI creates a new note in your workspace, making it easy to quickly save important information or ideas and easily find them in your Mem workspace on the go.
  4. Use Linked Mems: Organize your notes by creating bi-directional links to existing notes. This allows you to create traversable knowledge webs and easily navigate between related information. Simply type ‘@’ followed by the note you want to reference to create a link.
  5. Keyboard Shortcut: It is important to get familiar with your keyboard shortcuts. It would help you out within Mem and save you time and effort. For example: While playing around with Mem, I needed to access a note I cleared. I searched the entire editing area but couldn’t find an undo button. I remembered the undo button on my keyboard, and Ctrl+Z was there to the rescue.

Pros and cons of Mem AI

  • The AI technology in Mem allows for automatic tagging of notes.
  • The AI understands natural language search and can use conversational language to change, edit, or look for Mems.

Cons

  • To fully benefit from Mem, users must commit to using it as their primary workspace and invest time in organizing their information within the app.
  • The import function for transferring notes from other apps may not always be reliable.
  • Some users may find the lack of a folder-based system in Mem to be a departure from their preferred organizational method.

Mem Pricing Plan

Mem offers a free plan, but to access features like “self-organizing workspace,” you must upgrade to Mem X, which costs around $8–15 per month when billed annually. Custom pricing options are also available to suit your needs.

Final Thoughts on Mem.ai

Mem can be a game-changing app in the future, given that is evolving into much more than a notetaking AI. But in its current state, it has a long way to go before users can use it fully as a “search engine for their own lives” — a vision the founders are working hard to make a reality.

If this Verge article is to be believed, the effort to get there won’t be an easy one. It will be filled with convoluted fundraising rounds and some hardcore R&D, as the technology for that vision largely doesn’t exist. This means that a lot of work will need to be put in from scratch.

As it stands today, we did like how it uses AI to group related information together and show it to you when you need it. Definitely a bit like having a personal assistant, but again, this needs to evolve into more.

The standout feature of Mem is that it doesn’t rely on traditional folder systems. Instead, it uses AI to organize your work and connect related ideas. It’s a different approach, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a real game-changer.

For now, you can use it to help make sense of all the data you deal with. The learning curve can be steep, but we are bullish that its cutting-edge AI can be worth it, especially in the future. If you already have it trained by then, you will be ahead of the curve in many ways.
